January 12, 2012 - Snowstorm Recap

@MaineSkiFamily deck
Looks like most Maine ski areas picked up around 6-8" in this last storm. This storm over-performed at the coast (Portland North) as it stayed almost all snow with a little sleet at the end. Inland we were hoping for double-digits in the inches department but it looks like that was not the case. We will take it however! It all helps! I feel especially good for nordic skiers as they finally have a base to work with at the cross country centers.

Today's forecast is kind of goofy with freezing rain even up north??? Hopefully this event is light and does not lock up the snow in a layer of crust. The groomed trails will be fine however as the groomers will chew any crust right up. Maybe we will luck out up high and it will stay snow or sleet.

Looking at the weather forecasts for the weekend it looks like it is going to be cold and windy. If you are heading to one of the big three (Sugarloaf, Saddleback, Sunday River) make sure you check the wind forecasts and mountain reports before you go. There could be a few wind holds this weekend but I don't think the winds are going to be strong enough to shut down entire mountains. Likely a few higher lifts could be impacted.

There was some sad news from Sugarloaf yesterday where a skier died on the green circle Timberline trail after hitting a tree. Our heartfelt condolences to the family. When you think about it, there are millions of runs of skiers each year but unfortunately a few tragic accidents happen. I bet it is safer skiing than driving in a car but that does not diminish the tragedy for this person's family. It does stop and make you think a bit...

Bundle up this weekend and enjoy the snow everyone!

  1. As of 8AM Saturday morning (Jan 14) - Sugarloaf Superquad and Whiffletree lifts on Wind Hold. Saddleback says all lifts are going to be running. Winds on Top of Mt. Washington out of the west in the 50 MPH range. Consistent with my theory that Saddleback handles W-NW winds better than Sugarloaf.
