High Peaks Alliance is supporting a new project to develop publicly maintained ski glades at Bald Mountain in Oquossoc, Maine in the heart of the Rangeley Lakes region. Partnering with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands and Granite Backcountry Alliance they are looking to kick off this project this fall.
Bald Mountain in Oquossoc once hosted a small ski area in the 1960s. Remnants of the T-Bar line still exists today. Currently, it is managed for summer hiking with two existing parking areas and uphill hiking routes. This existing infrastructure, along with the proposed maintained ski glades, will be a great addition to the winter backcountry "earn-your-turn" community with free access to the Bald Mountain ski glade runs.

Volunteers are needed to become certified sawyers and help with glade construction and maintenance. Granite Backcountry Alliance is offering two sawyer certification weekends in late August.
The human powered backcountry ski movement is one of the fastest growing segments of the sport and becoming an increasingly important driver in Maine's outdoor economy. This is an exciting project for Western Maine!
